LeBron Drives Media!

LeBron’s Sixers signing gave Pennsylvania campaigns a massive local moment. One campaign jumped in; too many others stayed quiet.

LeBron James signing with the Sixers completely rewired the energy in Eastern Pennsylvania overnight. You couldn’t grab a coffee in King of Prussia, walk into a deli in Delco, or scroll through social media without everybody losing their minds over it. It’s one of those rare sports moments that instantly pulls the whole region together.

Governor Josh Shapiro got the memo right away. He hopped online, dropped content, and immediately plugged his campaign into the excitement sweeping the state. But if you scanned the feeds of local state reps, congressional candidates, and county officials across the Philly suburbs, it was dead silence. You’d think the biggest basketball story of the decade happened on another planet.

That kind of silence is just plain bad strategy. In a state where elections are won and lost on the margins in the suburbs, candidates shouldn’t be ignoring a massive, ready-made cultural moment. They don’t need to write a thesis on salary caps. A congressional candidate in Bucks or Montgomery County could spend thirty minutes at a neighborhood court, throw up a shot in a Sixers shirt, grab a local bite, and post a quick clip wishing the team luck.

It takes almost no effort, but it instantly cuts through the noise of generic attack ads and campaign mailers. Shapiro got it right because he knows that meeting people where their energy already is makes you look human. Passing on free goodwill sitting right on your doorstep just makes you look out of touch.
